For many homeowners, keeping up with exterior maintenance means juggling phone calls, chasing down contractors, and wondering who they can trust to show up and do the job right. Carter Filion, a Tooele native and entrepreneur in the University of Utah’s Master of Business Creation (MBC) program, set out to change that.
His startup, Curb Appeal MDX, acts as a digital general contractor for the outside of your home, connecting homeowners with vetted local providers for services such as lawn and landscape care, window cleaning, pressure washing, exterior lighting, snow removal, handyman work, and more.
Seasonal add-ons like ice-melt bucket delivery help homeowners prepare for winter, and they’ve become a hit with local businesses and service providers looking to reward their top clients with a useful, thoughtful winter gift, whether as a practical holiday thank you or a simple way to keep them prepared all season long.
“One of the ways I describe what we do is by saying, ‘Owning a home comes with two lists — the honey-do list and the honey-don’t-know-who-to-call list. Curb Appeal solves both,’” Filion said.
By centralizing scheduling, communication, and payments, Curb Appeal MDX makes home upkeep simple and reliable for homeowners, while giving service providers steady work and faster payments. “Curb Appeal is built on trust and accountability,” Filion said. “Homeowners get peace of mind, and providers get the consistency they need to succeed.”
The inspiration for the company came after Filion’s sister was defrauded by a contractor who vanished after being paid in full. Seeing firsthand how easily people could be taken advantage of pushed him to design a platform that protects families while rewarding honest contractors.
The name MDX also carries personal meaning: it stands for Maddox, Filion’s son. “Becoming a dad unlocked a whole new level of motivation,” he said. “My wife, Mickelle, and my son, Maddox, are my why — they’re the reason I want to build something lasting.”
Since its launch, Curb Appeal MDX has expanded across Tooele and Salt Lake counties, forming partnerships with property managers and real estate agents. Acceptance into the Master of Business Creation program at the David Eccles School of Business has accelerated that growth. “The program has been a game changer,” Filion said. “It’s helped me focus on what really moves the needle while surrounding me with other founders who bring diverse perspectives.”
One of the biggest perks of the University of Utah’s MBC program for Filion has been working with his mentor, Vernon Hanssen, CEO and owner of Gourmandise Group. “Vernon pushes me to think deeper and set goals that actually move the needle,” Filion said. “His feedback keeps me focused on what matters most for Curb Appeal.”
Looking ahead, Filion hopes to make Curb Appeal MDX the go-to name for exterior home care across Utah, helping homeowners and local service providers thrive through trusted connections and reliable service.
